She mentions what a wonderful time they had with him at her dinner party. Also the social editor, of "The Herald", had called her. He wanted to a little story about their evening. The Congressional club announced that he is to be their guest on Friday. She also invites him to lunch with her and her daughter, Vera Bloom, before going to the club.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
